Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Most research projects engage faculty and students in multidisciplinary teams that cross departmental, college, and university lines.

Undergraduate Research Position

A paid research position ($15/hour) for an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering (ME) or Electrical Engineering (EE) student for Fall 2025 is available. The research topic is the programming of an autonomous mobile robot with path-planning capabilities, and the intended use is in-orbit spacecraft repair. The project is funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The selected student(s) will work with Ashton Orosa (avo3@uakron.edu), Kayla Dremann (kjd72@uakron.edu), and Motaz Hassan (mmr93@uakron.edu) from the Mechanical Engineering Department. The work hours are flexible and can be decided later based on mutual agreement; however, the expectation is to be able to work part-time over the fall.

The required set of qualifications for the candidates are as follows:

• Mechanical or Electrical Engineering students in their Sophomore or Junior year
• GPA 3.0 or higher
• Some familiarity with programming (Excel, MATLAB, Python, C++, etc.)
Self-motivated and interested in learning new skills

While not required, possessing any of the following desired qualifications is a plus:

• Working and/or theoretical knowledge of robotics
• Familiarity with programming in Python

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

The School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering offers a competitive summer research experience for undergraduate (REU) students. Students will participate in a 9-week summer internship to investigate a fundamental question within the broad disciplines of polymer science and polymer engineering including polymer chemistry, polymer physics, polymer characterization, and biomaterials.
